A BEAUTIFUL SMILE
Oral hygiene and prevention are key to maintaining healthy, beautiful teeth and gums. It prevents the onset of caries, periodontitis and other periodontal and oral diseases.
Prophylactic measures primarily include fluoride prophylaxis, including adults and children.
The power of fluoride
The idea is to reduce the susceptibility of tooth tissues to decay. In children and adolescents, fluoride is used for proper tooth mineralization, protecting teeth from decay and treating initial caries. And in adults to inhibit plaque growth and protect teeth from sensitivity. Brushing teeth, rinsing with special liquids, flossing, and providing the body with calcium and fluoride on a daily basis are preventive measures. Fluoride is contained in products like nuts, fish oil, fish, seafood, peas, spinach, lettuce, carrots, tea and chocolate. Another issue is prophylaxis at the dentist’s office. Preventive treatments include:
- Sandblasting (removal of plaque)
- Scaling (removal of tartar)
- Varnishing
- Varnishing
Brushing with toothpaste is the most important part of hygiene. The range of products available on the market is a whole cross-section of different pastes with or without fluoride. From pastes for sensitivity, with vitamins, for people with periodontal disease or orthodontic patients, but also teeth whitening.
EMS – MAKE ME SMILE. PROFESSIONAL HYGIENIZATION
Patients at Mio-Dent love Airflow Prophylaxis Master.
The innovation introduced by EMS to the GBT system – Guided Biofilm Therapy is the best solution to prevent periodontal disease and caries. The highest and most important goal is “NO PAIN” painless treatment. The sand used in EMS – Airflow PLUS based on erythritol has many clinical applications. It is used both above and below the gum line for cleaning teeth. Cleaning within bridges and implants is already a painless experience for the patient and is a guarantee for maintaining a healthy periodontium. This is a more prevention-oriented practice that will ensure less invasive procedures in the future and better results from non-surgical periodontal treatment.
GBT protocol – Guided Biofilm Therapy – what is it?
GBT – a scientifically proven protocol. Reduces the risk of caries, gingivitis and periodontitis. Eight stages of GBT guarantee patients’ lasting oral health. The first stage is assessing and controlling infection; the next is staining plaque. We make visible the biofilm in the mouth, which is as much as 95% of the reason for all dental and periodontal problems. The third stage is motivation, i.e., emphasizing the importance of preventive oral hygiene at home hygiene level, e.g., using dental floss and brushes to clean interdental surfaces where food is often deposited. The fourth and fifth stage of the GBT protocol is sandblasting with Airflow technology, which is the least invasive and painless cleaning of teeth at the supragingival and subgingival levels and even in deep gingival pockets up to 9 mm. The use of sand is versatile. For use above and below the gingiva on exposed dentin. In root furcations, interdentally, on deciduous teeth, at orthodontic brackets. Tongue and palate, in cavities and fissures, before placing a filling. In prosthodontics and around implants. The sixth level is the removal of supragingival and subgingival calculus with the original PIEZON – NO PAIN technology. The last two items are the inspection and appointment schedule. Make sure that all teeth surfaces are free of deposits and tartar. Scheduling further visits by the Dental Hygienist and the Patient depends on the clinical need.
Plaque staining.
Evaluation of plaque stained with GC TriPlaque ID gel shows areas of the teeth that often remain under-cleaned in home hygiene. Only when the biofilm is visible can it be completely removed. Biofilm is barely visible to the naked eye. The EMS Biofilm Discloser staining sponge makes the presence of early but mature biofilm visible. Removing plaque makes it possible to spot the early stages of tooth decay. If light blue colour appears, we are dealing with a plaque that produces acid, which can cause demineralization of enamel and white spots on teeth. Studies indicate that biofilm – harmful bacteria – penetrating the body through the gums are relevant to heart disease, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, Parkinson’s, pancreatic cancer and many other life-threatening diseases. So don’t underestimate dental diseases such as tooth decay and periodontal inflammation.
Removing tartar with hand tools can be painful, and polishing with erasers and polishes takes much time. Some areas on the surfaces of the teeth are inaccessible or difficult to reach; thus, the gums are prone to irritation during polishing. GBT therapy minimizes using hand instruments, and Airflow sand is the least invasive to all tooth tissues: enamel, dentin, cementum and gums. Increasing patient awareness in a combination of home and professional oral hygiene is key to the protocol. “No more pain” – regular dental care guarantees good overall health.
ICON – A MODERN METHOD OF REMOVING HYPERPIGMENTATION
White spots appearing on teeth are a problem for many patients. The most common reason for their appearance is an excess of fluoride in the enamel or an early stage of caries development. Until now, standard treatment has been used. However, a new, less invasive method of treating these conditions has emerged. ICON, or infiltration with a liquid resin of finer carious spots.
This painless treatment method can be carried out in a single visit to the dental office. Such a procedure can be performed by a doctor but also by a dental hygienist.
ICON, a liquid resin, is absorbed by the affected areas in the damaged tooth, filling them and blocking the penetration of various acids. Early caries can thus be quickly stopped while preserving tooth tissue with full aesthetic and medical benefits. Air and water trapped in a carious lesion have a lower refractive index than healthy hard tooth tissue. This results in unsightly discolouration, known as white spots.
The procedure is very comfortable, takes about 20 minutes and requires no anaesthesia, with the added bonus that the enamel will also be strengthened.
The ICON method involves the removal of white spots from the surface of the teeth. However, carious foci on a given tooth must not exceed 1/3 of the height of the shallow dentin layer.
The procedure begins with thoroughly cleaning the tooth surface with a toothbrush and paste. Then a gel is applied to prepare the tooth surface. This activity is repeated several times until a matte and porous surface is obtained. The hygienist then applies an ICON preparation based on advanced composite resins to the tooth. This preparation penetrates the dentin by blocking the open pores, preventing cariogenic acid entry. The resin is spontaneously absorbed, infiltrates, and fills the pores of the carious lesion and then hardens. This prevents further penetration of the tooth by acids. The final step is a very thorough polishing of the tooth surface.
To sum up: the ICON method is a very effective and comfortable solution that does not create the need for complex treatment and mechanical interference in the deeper tissues of the teeth. The minimally invasive nature makes the procedure completely painless, and white spots are removed. It should be noted that ICON works only for minor carious lesions and discolouration; more serious lesions affecting the teeth will require classical treatment methods.
DENTAL PROPHYLAXIS
Dental prophylaxis deals with the prevention of periodontal and dental diseases. It is important in preventing the development of dental caries and gum and periodontal diseases, such as periodontitis. In our office, as part of preventive dentistry, we perform various treatments to thoroughly clean the surface of the teeth from tartar, deposits and stains, strengthen them and stop the first signs of dental and periodontal diseases. Oral hygiene allows you to keep your teeth healthy for years to come. However, it requires regularity and discipline. It is not only brushing and flossing at home but also regular check-ups at the dentist. Only the doctor, using specialized tools, can notice the first disturbing changes on the teeth and in advance, effectively prevent the development of the disease. Thus, preventive dental care allows you to avoid heavily invasive, lengthy treatments. It works in three areas – it strengthens teeth, prevents disease and improves their external appearance. As part of it, we perform the following procedures in our office:
Scaling
This is a procedure to remove tartar – both supragingival and subgingival. It is performed using an ultrasonic scaler, which does not irritate the enamel. It is usually painless, but we can use local anaesthesia at the patient’s request.
Tooth sandblasting
The procedure involves spraying a thin jet of a mixture of water, air and sand under pressure to remove soft plaque and stains, such as those from coffee, wine or smoking. Dental sandblasting is extremely thorough, reaching even the most inaccessible places. In addition, it is safe and painless. It is usually used as an adjunct to scaling.
Tooth fluoridation
Also called tooth varnishing. Performed as a strengthening of the enamel after scaling and sandblasting procedures. It involves coating teeth with a layer of preparation with high fluoride content. The fluoridation procedure prevents the development of caries and tooth hypersensitivity and is completely painless. After dental hygienization, we perform professional oral hygiene instruction in our office, including selecting the right toothbrush, learning how to brush properly at home and individual dietary recommendations. All this is done so that the effects of conservative dentistry treatments can be preserved for as long as possible. We recommend an oral check-up every six months on average. This will make it possible to quickly diagnose pathological changes in the teeth, gums and mucosa.
According to the principle, dental prophylaxis is an action – prevention is better than cure. In our office, we offer a full range of preventive treatments. We carry out each of them with the utmost precision and care. Tartar, plaque and discolouration are removed using modern medical equipment and dental solutions.
In cases where available conservative treatment methods fail, the patient is referred for surgical consultation. This field deals with teeth extractions whose condition does not allow for conservative and endodontic treatment. Surgical procedures also include extractions for orthodontic indications and removal of eighths, which often cause patients a number of discomforts. The dental surgeon also deals with resections, bone reconstruction and implant placement.
